Happy New Year! It’s Day 1 of 2012. Day 1 of 366. Time to get going.
It took me a good, long time to identify a single project worth calling the first in 366 that will make up The Kick-Off. I was looking for something that marked the beginning of something new, something that was fresh, inspirational and that had lots and lots of potential. It didn’t take long to find one that I think meets all those criteria, and beyond.
Breaker’s mission is to drive social innovation and alternative learning by mobilizing interdisciplinary teams of young creative collaborators to help solve the world’s most pressing problems. We connect our teams of 18-24 year olds with global thought leaders and industry experts to answer major challenges like literacy and urban agriculture. We facilitate a creative problem-solving design process and teach the entrepreneurial skills necessary to transform ideas into businesses.
Each unique Breaker project is a twelve-week collaboration between the talented Breaker team, the visionaries who pose their challenge, and the industry experts who support their process. We work with multiple partner organizations across New York City to ideate, build, and test real solutions with real market value. Participants leave Breaker with new perspectives and abilities. Products result from Breaker ready to be stress-tested and developed.
This project combines a thousand elements that I find great. It involves bringing creative people together, providing them the tools, the resources and the infrastructure to not just build new ideas but to bring them to life. It’s the first step in the act of world changing, and to me, that sounds like a good way to start this year.
$1.00 in the bucket, $1.00 closer to their goal.
They’ve got 3 days to go (funding ends on Jan. 5, 9:00 AM), so please consider pitching in to help make their vision a reality.
